How it works

How to Use the Mulch Calculator

Choose the bed shape, enter the dimensions, and add the planned depth. Select the bag size if buying packaged mulch. Choose cost per bag or cost per cubic yard to match the supplier quote.

1. Measure every bed

Use length and width for rectangles or diameter for circles. Calculate separate sections when the landscape contains several shapes.

2. Select the depth

Enter the new layer depth. When refreshing an existing bed, measure how much depth is actually missing rather than entering the total old and new layer.

3. Choose bulk or bags

Use cubic yards for bulk orders and whole bag count for packaged products. Compare delivery charges and minimum bulk quantities separately.

Clear calculations

How Much Mulch Do I Need?

Mulch volume equals bed area multiplied by layer depth. The calculator converts the result to cubic feet and cubic yards, then divides cubic feet by the selected bag volume.

Bag results always round up because part of a bag cannot normally be purchased. Bulk results remain decimal values so they can be rounded to the supplier’s sales increment.

An optional allowance can account for settling, uneven beds, and handling loss. Do not add material already present in the bed when calculating a refresh layer.

Coverage From One Cubic Yard

One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet. Coverage changes directly with depth.

Common projects

Mulch for Different Areas

Use the actual bed shape and refresh depth for each section.

Garden beds

Calculate around planted areas without piling mulch against stems or trunks. Existing mulch changes the amount needed for a refresh.

Trees and borders

Circular beds can be estimated from diameter. Subtract large unmulched inner areas when they materially change total volume.

Play and landscape areas

Product type, required depth, and safety specification may differ from decorative garden mulch. Follow the product and project requirements.

Accuracy

Measurements, Assumptions, and Ordering

Measure each area, use the planned depth, and select the bag size printed on the product. Results estimate material quantity only. Plant health, safe depth, product suitability, drainage, and installation should follow reliable horticultural or manufacturer guidance.

Questions

Mulch Calculator FAQ

How many cubic feet are in a yard of mulch?

One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet.

How many 2 cubic foot bags equal one cubic yard?

It takes 13.5 bags mathematically, so a purchase requires 14 whole bags.

How much area does one yard cover at 3 inches?

One cubic yard covers about 108 square feet at 3 inches deep.

Can I calculate a circular bed?

Yes. Enter the circle diameter and the calculator uses π multiplied by radius squared.

Should I add extra mulch?

Use a small transparent allowance only when settling, uneven ground, or handling loss justifies it.

Is bagged or bulk mulch better?

The calculator compares quantity. Cost, delivery, storage, and product choice depend on the supplier and project.
